The Importance of Proper Water Damage Repair and Dry Out: Preventing Microbial Growth
8/28/2024 (Permalink)
When water damage strikes, whether from a burst pipe, heavy rain, or flooding, quick and thorough response and repair is essential. While it might be tempting to handle the situation on your own, improper water damage repair and drying out can lead to more serious issues, such as microbial growth. Here's why it's crucial to ensure the job is done right the first time.
The Hidden Threat of Improper Drying
Water damage is not always visible to the naked eye. Even after the surface appears dry, moisture can remain trapped in walls, flooring, and other materials. This excess moisture creates the perfect environment for microbial growth to flourish.
Microbial growth can start as quickly as 24 to 48 hours after water exposure, making timely and proper drying a critical step in the restoration process. If the affected areas are not thoroughly dried, the growth can spread, leading to further complications and increased restoration costs.
The Importance of Professional Equipment
Proper water damage repair involves more than just mopping up the water and airing out the space. It requires specialized equipment to detect hidden moisture, such as infrared cameras and moisture meters, as well as industrial-grade dehumidifiers and air movers to ensure that all areas are completely dry.
At SERVPRO of St. Augustine, St. Augustine Beach, S. Nocatee & World Golf Village, our team of professionals is equipped with the tools and expertise needed to thoroughly dry out your property, preventing microbial growth and ensuring that your home or business is fully restored.
Why You Should Trust the Experts
DIY water damage repair might seem like a cost-effective solution, but without the proper knowledge and equipment, it can lead to incomplete drying and microbial growth. By trusting the experts at SERVPRO®, you can rest assured that your property will be properly assessed, dried, and repaired, minimizing the risk of further damage.
Remember, when it comes to water damage, time is of the essence. The sooner the repair and drying process begins, the less likely it is that microbial growth will take hold. Preventing and Handling Mold During Florida Summers: Embracing Sunshine Safely
5/22/2023 (Permalink)
Summertime in Florida brings with it sunshine, warm weather, and the chance to enjoy activities outdoors. However, summertime also brings high levels of humidity that can create a breeding ground for mold. Mold is a common problem faced by residents in the sunshine state and can be a cause of health problems and damage to homes. We will explore the challenges of dealing with mold in Florida over the summer and provide some helpful tips to keep it at bay.
Florida’s tropical climate and proximity to water is a big factor in its high humidity levels, especially during the summer months. Whether it’s a small spot in the bathroom or a hidden infestation behind the wall, mold can quickly become a continuous issue if not addressed quickly. To prevent mold its important to understand which areas of your home that are most vulnerable to moisture creeping in, such as:
- Bathrooms
- Kitchens
- Basements
- Windows
Taking Proactive Measures
A key step in mold prevention is proper ventilation and airflow. Ensure that your home has sufficient airflow by use of fans, opening windows and running air conditioners or dehumidifiers. By improving air flow, you can reduce moisture accumulating in your home which will prevent mold growth. Being vigilant in identifying and rectifying any suspected water leaks or dampness is another way to discourage mold growth. Regularly inspecting your plumbing, roof, and windows for potential sources of moisture and repairing them immediately to keep your home dry and well-ventilated is essential to minimize mold growth.

3 Signs There's Mold Growing in Your Carpet
2/5/2021 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Greater St Augustine / St Augustine Beach is here to help, 24/7/365, we're only a call away at (904) 429-4457.
Mold can damage carpeting and cause health effects. Therefore, it's important to understand the common signs of mold growth so that you can take preventative action immediately. Here’s a closer look at the main indications of this issue and how carpet cleaning can salvage household flooring.
How Can You Tell if Mold Is Growing in Your Carpet?
1. Bad Smell
You might notice a musty smell, or guests may comment on a strange odor. If you spend most of your time indoors, you might not notice the smell because you've become accustomed to it. However, it’s important to check underneath the carpets once you've detected a problem.
2. Damp Carpet
A wet carpet can result from recent spills or flooding and should be cleaned as soon as possible. Allowing it to sit could lead to bacteria and fungal growth. If leakage has occurred for an extended period, you will probably find mold underneath the carpet and should seek carpet cleaning services.
3. Discoloration
Mold can be difficult to detect if it’s grown deep into the carpet, but advanced growth can appear in various colors. Families might notice green, red, or black patches on the carpet. Inspect the bottom of the carpet and the floor underneath for any signs of these spots. Carpet cleaning services may be able to resolve the problem. However, if the damage is extensive, the carpet needs to be replaced immediately.

What to Do If Your Home Is Contaminated by Black Mold
Along with calling a mold remediation specialist, here are some other steps you should take.
1. Test for the Substance
Testing your home for mold is crucial, as it allows you to locate the most infested areas. Testing also specifies the type of mold, which is helpful for implementing the correct removal method. If you fail to completely remove mold or use the wrong cleaning method, spores will continue to grow and may cause health effects to your family.
2. Fix Leaks
Mold needs a damp, warm environment to thrive. If you’ve had a leaky pipe for several months or years, chances are that mold will grow around that area. Additionally, mold can also be caused by condensation, which sometimes appears on windows and window sills, as well as pipes. To prevent growth, fix any leaky areas in your plumbing system, and wipe all windows frequently.
3. Consider Professional Mold Remediation
While you can clean up mold on your own, getting professional help is recommended. A professional service will effectively clean mold from hidden areas, such as underneath baseboards in the walls, to ensure that all spores are eliminated. They’ll also clean mold off items, such as furniture, to salvage your belongings. The team will conduct a final test to ensure all traces of growth are eliminated.
Do you suspect you have mold in your home? Contact the team at SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach for testing and removal services. Here is a guide to help you understand the potential consequences mold exposure has on your furry family members.
Understanding the Effects of Mold on Pets
What Are Mold Exposure Symptoms?
Mold can cause health effects for humans and animals.
What Should I Do to Remove It?

Instead, call a mold remediation team to address the area like SERVPRO. They will use safety gear and protocols to remove the spores from the air and surfaces without endangering your family. Once the mold remediation team is finished, your home will be safe for your furry friends.
How Can I Prevent Mold?

Use dehumidifiers to minimize the water in the air to below 50% to make it difficult for the mold to grow. Frequently wash your pet’s food and water bowls and wipe down their kennels or cages, making sure that they dry quickly. Mold in the home causes numerous issues. It can lead to health effects in vulnerable individuals, such as those with allergies. Its presence requires immediate mold remediation. Use the following guide to learn about some types that are more prevalent in Florida homes.
Which Household Molds Are Common in Florida?
1. Mucor
Mucor can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. It is an allergenic mold found inside and outside the home. Mucor can appear white, yellow, and gray, with a fluffy, cottony texture. It is often found indoors on furniture and fixtures damaged by moisture, but spores can also appear in household dust.
2. Fusarium
Fusarium can impact water logged fixtures and fabrics. It can also be found on plants and foods, so check your kitchen and living room for any signs of it. Like mucor, it’s an allergenic substance that can cause sneezing, congestion, rashes, and hives. This mold has pink, white, or red coloring, and spores can easily spread between rooms.
3. Stachybotrys
Stachybotrys is a type of black mold which can be highly toxic. High humidity is a major contributor to its growth. It can be found between walls and in crawlspaces, but it may also be present near a continuous water source. It’s particularly harmful to children, so contact a mold remediation specialist if you notice a slimy greenish-black substance in your bathroom or kitchen.

When mold grows in your home, it can lower air quality and can cause health effects. All mold needs to grow is a cool, dark place with a source of moisture. While mold is most often found in the basement of homes, there are a few other places where it can grow as well. Learn more about them below so if needed, you are prepared to take the necessary mold remediation steps.
3 Ares Where Mold May Grow Indoors
1. Ventilation
Because you are unable to see inside ducts, mold may grow inside them without your knowledge. This is often due to high humidity inside the ducts, leading to condensation. If you notice your nasal passages are irritated and the vents have a musty odor, you may need mold remediation- the ventilation system can spread mold spores throughout your home, and you won't be able to efficiently clean inside of the ducts yourself.
2. In Carpet
Because their fibers trap dust that mold spores can feed one, carpets can quickly become a home to unwanted mold. All it takes is an accidental spill, and the mold spores have enough moisture to grow. You can minimize the risk by vacuuming regularly and cleaning up spills as soon as they happen. If mold does grow, hire a mold remediation professional for the best chance at saving the carpet.
3. Under Sinks
The cool darkness beneath kitchen and bathroom sinks create a hospitable environment for mold, and if the faucet or drain leaks, mold can thrive. The best way to avoid this problem is by keeping your plumbing well-maintained. Clean under the sinks regularly to kill off mold spores that may be waiting for the chance to grow.

4 Reasons Why You Should Not Remove Mold Yourself
11/30/2020 (Permalink)
Mold thrives in moist, dark areas. Mold is commonly found in the attic, bathroom, and basement of many homes. If you have recently discovered mold in your household, it is best to have it removed immediately to prevent your family from getting sick. It is not wise to perform mold remediation yourself for a number of reasons:
1. You might put yourself at risk
Mold can cause health effects.
2. You Do Not Have the Right Equipment
Mold remediation requires the use of commercial-grade products that effectively kill harmful spores. You will also need a HEPA filter and purifier to remove all traces of mold from your indoor air supply. These products and equipment are expensive and require training to be able to use them properly.
3. You Might Worsen the Problem
Attempting to remove mold in an incorrect manner may actually spread spores throughout the home and make the problem worse. Mold remediation specialists will quarantine the contaminated area before treating it, which prevents the possibility of the mold from spreading further.

Why Should You Leave Mold Restoration and Remediation to the Professionals at SERVPRO
7/11/2019 (Permalink)
Two of our Air-Scrubbing/Filtrating machines outside of our shop ready to be delivered to a new mold job! SERVPRO is the leader in mold removal!
St. Augustine’s heat and humidity create the perfect environment for mold to take hold and grow. Mold, especially black mold, can be a major health risk to you and your family. While mold remediation is simple if the area is small, it’s not always detectable until it has spread into a large area of your home. By then, it’s a biohazard, which is why you need to call a professional.
Why You Need to Leave Mold Remediation to the Professionals
1. Kills Mold at the Source
Many homeowners think that they can eliminate mold by washing the area with bleach. While you may wash all the visible mold off, bleach is ineffective at killing the spores. These spores will remain dormant until they sense even the slightest bit of moisture—and then will bloom once again.
A professional has the right equipment to effectively remove mold from all surfaces. They can track mold to the source, eliminating visible blooms and all spores. They can even apply protectants that can prevent mold from developing in troublesome areas again.
2. Repairs Damage
A professional can assess whether cleaning or replacing materials will be more effective. If things like carpets, floorboards, and air ducts can be cleaned, they will do so. But, if the mold has permeated large areas of your home, such as large portions of drywall, ceilings, or wall studs, a professional can actually replace those affected portions for you.
3. Works Safely
Certain types of mold are toxic. Black mold emits mycotoxins, which can cause serious health problems. Depending on the severity of the damage, mold remediation is a type of biohazard cleanup, requiring special attire, protocols, and disposal measures. Only a professional has the training to treat mold safely.
Homeowners in North East Florida rely on SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine Beach for their water damage cleanup and mold remediation. They have the training and experience to identify and eliminate your mold problem at the source, making sure it never comes back. Call them at (904) 429-4457 to schedule your appointment. Nation's Oldest City... Mold Damage St. Johns
7/9/2019 (Permalink)
When mold is not properly treated, it will spread throughout your home or business!
Our local franchise here in St. Augustine has been working around the clock to help the residents in the nation’s oldest city in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Initially, the majority of our concerns focused on remediating flood damage to homes and businesses in St. Johns County. Our focus has now shifted, and we are starting to see mold growth in buildings that were not properly remediated.
A lot of people believe that mold can be killed by applying bleach to the visible areas that are affected. We wanted to offer a few facts about mold that may not be common knowledge.
- Mold spores can’t be eliminated by treating with bleach!
- Bleach is 90% water, which hydrates mold spores, contributing to growth.
- Clorox Bleach Company, The Environmental protection Agency, and OSHA have all released statements saying that bleach does NOT kill mold.
- 30 days after bleach is exposed to oxygen (open bottles of bleach), the chemical loses up to 50% of its ability to disinfect
- Bleach is corrosive when combined with other cleaning products. This can seriously damage your property!

5 Actions to Take When You Find Mold at Home
8/6/2018 (Permalink)
Mold Free Home
Characterized by a dark green, grey, or black color, fuzzy and velvety texture, and a musty smell, mold is a common problem for many households. It’s the byproduct of excess moisture, so it’s caused by a flood or a plumbing accident. Whatever the exact reason may be, the only way to properly deal with it is through mold remediation. This complex process involves tasks, like water extraction, spore containment, and air filtration. However, before mold remediation can happen, here’s what you need to do when you first detect mold in your home.
5 Tasks to Do When You First Spot Mold
1. Check for Symptoms
Prolonged mold exposure can cause health problems like eye irritation, headaches, sneezing, sore throats, and in some severe cases, a skin rash. As you may expect, it can also exacerbate respiratory conditions. If you’ve seen mold and are experiencing any of these symptoms, focus on your health and call a doctor.
2. Assess the Problem
If your health isn’t affected, you can move onto figuring out how far the mold has spread. The size will determine if you need an emergency service. Generally, if the problem is larger than 10 square feet, it’s best to call the professionals ASAP. If it’s smaller, call for an appointment to get the spores tested; they’ll let you know whether it’s safe to clean things up on your own.
3. Schedule a Professional Visit
As mentioned, you’ll still need to call in the professionals, regardless of the size. No matter how small it looks, you need to be careful. Improper handling can cause the spores to spread, which only exacerbates the problem.
4. Search for the Cause
While you wait for the mold remediation specialists, try to determine the cause of the problem as best you can. Was there a flood recently? Do you have a dehumidifier that malfunctioned? Is there a problem with your plumbing? Knowing the cause will help them identify how far the mold might extend.
5. Contact Your Insurance Company
Don’t forget to check with your insurance company. Depending on the circumstances, your policy may cover the cost of the mold remediation process. For example, if a pipe burst and it led to water damage and subsequent mold, that may be covered.
For those in the area seeking trusted, experienced mold remediation specialists, call SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach today at (904) 429-4457. Their technicians deal with everything from the initial inspection all the way through to the cleaning and restoration process. Our team here at SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine/St. Augustine beach wanted to take an opportunity to clear up some misconceptions about mold. We understand mold is scary, and we want to put your mind at ease by debunking some of the common myths about mold.

Fact: If water damage occurs, mold can usually be avoided if you call SERVPRO within 72 hours. We always recommend calling immediately! Not only are our estimates 100% free, but our experts will also give you free opinions and advice for the actions you should take.
Myth: My carpet and drywall feel dry after a flood. Mold won’t grow because the surface feels dry to the touch.
Fact: Just because a surface feels dry, doesn’t mean it is! If water passes through drywall, it also may affect the insulation and the studs. Myth: Mold won’t grow in my home or business because I have never experienced any water damage situations
Fact: The quality of the air in your home or business will determine whether or not mold is capable of growing. According to the World Health Organization, poor air quality has led to $60 billion in employee sick leave and lost production. Dirty ducts circulate contaminants, which can lead to mold growth. In addition, dirty ducts lead to higher levels of humidity, creating more opportunity for mold to grow.

A Mold Remediation Expert's Guide to Black Fungus
6/4/2018 (Permalink)
Health
Although most mold types worsen allergies and will damage your home if they are not removed right away, black mold is particularly insidious. If you spot this fungus growing in the house, it’s crucial to call for mold remediation services right away, say the specialists at SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach in Florida. Here, they explain why this type is so dangerous and what you should do about it.
Why Is Black Mold Dangerous?
In addition to severe property damage, exposure to black mold will result in several serious health issues because of the harmful spores it releases. These include neurological issues, such as tremors and seizures, rashes, lung irritation, fevers, and fatigue. This fungus is particularly dangerous for pregnant women and causes immune system suppression, making people who are exposed to it even more likely to get sick.
What Can You Do About It?
There are a few simple ways to protect yourself from the effects of this fungus. First, since it develops in moist conditions, make sure any leaks in the house are fixed right away, and have a plumber inspect the residence once a year to check for problems you haven’t detected. Additionally, if you or a family member is experiencing cold- or flu-like symptoms, and you’ve ruled out other causes, have the house inspected for mold just to be safe.
If you do spot black mold growing in the home, don’t touch or go near it. Instead, call a mold remediation expert right away. They have the necessary tools, expertise, and safety gear and will perform a thorough evaluation of the house to find out where it is growing. They will also make sure it is completely removed to protect your health.
Black mold is dangerous, but fortunately, Florida residents can turn to the mold remediation experts at SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach when they find it growing inside. This team will respond promptly and find the best solution to the issue. They will also assist you with fire and water damage cleanup. To learn more, call (904) 429-4457 or visit them online today.

In the photo you can see the coquina covered in mold, and the drywall next to it trapping moisture inside
A local beachfront building managed by the St. Johns Cultural Center suffered water damage during Hurricane Irma. The building has an exterior made of coquina which made the building especially challenging to return to dry standard. SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine was hired to overcome the challenges presented by this historic building.
Our expert restoration teams arrived on site and quickly determined the facility had accumulated years of water damage, most recently during Hurricane Matthew. The building had never been properly mitigated, and it was determined that mold was present throughout the entire facility.
Over 5,000 square feet of space was affected, and our partners at H2H quickly wrote a mold protocol for us to use in the process of mold removal. All drywall, flooring, baseboard, and other affected materials were removed from the building before our teams placed drying equipment in the facility. The mold protocol helped SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach to remove all of the mold in the building. The building passed the mold post test on the first try!
Despite difficult conditions, our teams were able to overcome the odds to ensure the tenants of the building will have a facility that is safe for many years to come!
Top 5 Mold Remediation Tips

Our mold defending Mini Cooper out and about in the Ancient City!
Mold isn’t something to take lightly. If you and your family are exposed to this fungus, it can result in many different health effects, including coughing, eye irritation, and skin irritation. That’s why it’s important to prevent it and take immediate action when you do encounter mold. The professionals at SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach offer the following mold remediation tips.
The Top 5 Mold Remediation Tips
1. Educate Yourself
The first step to keeping mold away is learning more about moisture. After all, mold growth results from a water or moisture problem. Once you find out how moisture gets into a home, identify the moisture sources in your house and use it to discover mold.
2. Determine the Severity
It’s important to figure out just how bad the mold situation in your home is. Once you know the extent of the mold contamination in your house, it will be easier to establish the appropriate remediation plan.
3. Record the Mold Issue
To help mold cleaning experts develop the proper remediation strategy, take photos and video recordings of the mold and describe its presence in writing. The professionals will use the documentation to determine who will oversee the remediation, if testing needs to be done, and if residents have to stay somewhere else during the cleanup.
4. Remove Mold
Remediation involves several steps, including correcting the moisture problem, blocking off the contaminated area, getting rid of mold-infected materials, cleaning surfaces, and performing a visibility test. This can be quite complex and dangerous, so it’s best to hire a professional cleanup and restoration company.
5. Assess the Remediation Plan
The last thing you must do is determine if the remediation was successful. Recheck every area of your house for mold and water damage, including behind the walls. If you don’t see visible signs of mold or notice any strange smells, there’s a good chance the remediation plan achieved its goal.
If you need to schedule mold remediation, contact SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach at (904) 429-4457. They specialize in both residential and commercial remediation services.
Mold in the Cold

Mold took over this utility room in the winter due to the warm and humid conditions
There is a common misconception that mold only grows in the warmer months. The truth is that mold doesn't discriminate based on the climate. Mold has the potential to grow year round, and SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach is here to help you avoid mold this winter.
Here are some ways that winter mold invades your home or business:
- Cranking up the heat in your home traps the warm air inside with no ventilation. Condensation builds up moisture and affects the relative humidity level. If the weather permits, consider cracking a window for a small amount of time to allow stale air to escape.
- Remove your shoes before entering your home. Dead plants and leaves are a source of heat on the ground and have the potential to release mold spores. Wet shoes in the winter will also release moisture into your carpets. Moisture entering a warm building with poor air flow can cause mold to grow.
- Make sure the windows and doors in your home are properly sealed to avoid moisture entering your home.
If you have concerns about mold growth in your home, please contact us at 904-429-4457 for a free inspection.

- Mold claims through insurance are capped at $11,000 (with a $1,000 deductible). This means you need to act fast if you see mold, as damage spreads quickly and can exceed $11,000!
- Mold requires negative air pressure to kill the spores. Building containments to restrict airflow is the most reliable way to eliminate growth.
Mold remediation is a science, and should be left to your local SERVPRO professionals. We are licensed to remediate mold, and we work closely with the inspectors you hire to assure our work is thoroughly completed. We are the only SERVPRO located in the nation’s oldest city, and we are here to help 24/7. No job is too big or too small!
3 reasons to leave Mold Restoration and Remediation to professions at SERVPRO
8/16/2017 (Permalink)
Homeowners in Florida rely on SERVPRO of Greater St. Augustine / St. Augustine Beach for their water damage cleanup and mold remediation. They have the training and experience to identify and eliminate your mold problem at the source, making sure it never comes back. Call them at (904) 429-4457 to schedule your appointment. Let’s face it, the thought of mold will keep you up at night. Some companies use the threat of mold as a scare tactic, often taking advantage of clients who are in a vulnerable position. Mold inspections can be expensive and time consuming, often requiring several days for test results to be returned, but there is no need to panic. We are here to help!
